ORDINARY DAY

by Ricardo Sapio Jr.

Stop Motion Film

Oil Paint | Video | Sound

We live in a time of “Striving for Materialism” but having so much does not always make us happy. We are blinded by the glamour when we look onto those of wealthy lifestyles. While looking onto those who are more fortunate makes us dissatisfied with our own world. We start to lose sight of our true needs and the society around us. It is similar to when we look down at those in poverty. We become somewhat content within ourselves.

Nobody enjoys being disregarded, yet we find ourselves avoiding or overlooking those who are under such struggles. It may be due to our ignorance, selfishness, fear, or the fact that we have come to a point in life that seeing less fortunate people is normal. However, Ricardo, a student Filipino artist, would disagree with seeing people struggle as a norm. This multimedia art known as “Ordinary Day” illustrates the lives of the invisible through compassion and creativity.

“Ordinary Day” is a stop motion film using rough brushstrokes of oil paint upon canvas paper. It depicts a plain wall mural saying, ‘Be a Unicorn, not a Zombie’; where a common scene of people passing by and a poor beggar asking for alms. As seen in the film, bystanders continuously walk past the still beggar as if her presence were non-existent or invisible. However, despite being ignored, the beggar remains at her place waiting for a simple act of kindness, hope, and change as symbolized by the yellow butterfly which also seems invisible.
