VISUALIZING THE FEAR

"SEE WHAT YOU HEAR"

by Merry Chrislen Estember

Multimemedia Installation

Installation | Sound

Fear is our emotional response to something we consider dangerous or terrifying. We often avoid circumstances or situations that frighten us. For instance, falling, drowning, or insects. However, this does not help us with overcoming our fears; in fact, it can have the opposite effect.

Avoiding what scares us often feeds fear and keeps it alive. Thus, the creation of “Visualizing the Fear: See What You Hear.” Merry, the artist, revisits a once forgotten memory of when she gained Athazagoraphobia – the fear of being forgotten, ignored, or abandoned – to overcome it. She represents this memory as a multimedia art installation.

The installation is situated in a dark cuboid space illuminated by red fluorescent lights that symbolizes the human heart. It is further composed of a foldable bed, saline bags and syringes that dangle above, two medical gowns, and an all-around sound, which somewhat depicts a hospital room setting to where her fear all started. However, the piece can also represent the current situation our society is facing.
